The mission

Why this exists.

Nutrition labels are written to look healthy, not to be understood. Healthy Scan exists so a shopper can scan a barcode in the aisle and instantly see processing level, nutrition quality, and environmental impact — without decoding a science paper.

Inside the build

Thought through, end to end.

5 highlights

Barcode Scanning: Engineered a camera-based scan flow with permission handling so users can go from home to product insights in one tap.

Open Food Facts Insights: Integrated product lookup to surface Nutri-Score, Eco-Score, NOVA processing level, ingredients, allergens, and nutrition bars.

Firebase Auth: Built email/password and Google Sign-In with a polished onboarding and login experience.

UI/UX: Designed a health-focused green interface with educational score cards, favorites, scan stats, and a custom wavy bottom nav centered on the scanner FAB.

Architecture: Structured the app with Provider state management, Dio networking, and cached product images across Android, iOS, Web, and Desktop.

The hard parts

Constraints I designed around.

The features that look effortless were the ones that fought back.

  1. 01

Camera to verdict in one tap

    The obstacle

Barcode scanning is usually a permission maze plus a slow lookup, which is fatal in a supermarket aisle.

    How I solved it

Engineered a permission-aware scan flow that hits Open Food Facts and lands on Nutri-Score, Eco-Score, NOVA, allergens, and nutrition bars in a single motion.

  2. 02

Dense data that still reads in ten seconds

    The obstacle

Raw ingredient tables overwhelm people who have a cart behind them and a decision in front of them.

    How I solved it

Designed educational score cards and visual bars so the product's story is scannable before the fine print.

  3. 03

    Identity without killing curiosity

    The obstacle

Favorites and scan history need auth, but a login wall stops the first scan — the moment the product has to prove itself.

    How I solved it

Built Firebase email/password and Google Sign-In behind a health-green onboarding that feels like part of the product, not a gate.
